Maintaining the purity of the teaching
All qualified and certified teachers of Transcendental Meditation have:
- taken a Teacher Training Course by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
- completed a re-certification course by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
- are registered with the professional regulatory body that maintains the standards of teaching throughout the UK - Maharishi Vedic Institute www.mvi.org.uk
All qualified and certified teachers of Transcendental Meditation are part of the Vedic Tradition and are charged by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to keep the teaching pure. This helps the teaching to be passed down from generation to generation in the way it was originally intended to be taught. It also helps to give everyone who learns, the best possible experience of Transcendental Meditation.
Shortly before he passed away in 2008, Maharishi said that we (qualified and certified teachers) now have total Vedic knowledge. Over 53 years Maharishi gradually unfolded more and more of this ancient wisdom. All qualified and certified teachers of Transcendental Meditation teach from this deep level of knowledge, allowing everyone who learns from them to gain maximum results from their practice.
To learn more about Transcendental Meditation first make contact with your local teacher. They will be able to answer any questions and offer you an introductory talk.
Introductory talks are sometimes held as public lecture and sometimes they are given individually.
The talk is free of charge, and involves no commitment to learn. You can come and hear more about Transcendental Meditation and can even bring any friends or family who may also be interested. The teacher will be happy to answer any questions.
The presentation covers points such as: what is Transcendental Meditation; what you can expect to get out of the practice; a little about the scientific research; how Transcendental Meditation works; where it comes from; and how it differs from other systems of meditation and relaxation.
Afterwards you may decide to sign up for a course to learn to meditate, or you may decide to give it further thought. If you decide to learn, you can make an appointment for instruction.
The course of instruction consists of four sessions of about 90 minutes on four consecutive days – followed by a six-month follow-up programme.
Meditation Course Structure
Instruction takes place in four sessions on consecutive days; each taking about one and a half hours. The first session is one-to-one instruction where you practise Transcendental Meditation for the first time; in the three subsequent lessons, more information and instruction is given on the basis of practice at home during the course.
Because it is convenient for most people, the course usually starts on a Saturday, with follow up sessions held on Sunday morning and then Monday and Tuesday evenings. However, it may be possible to arrange a different schedule if that is more convenient. Feel free to ask your teacher about this.
By the end of the course you will have all the knowledge and experience you need to meditate on your own at home; you have learned a technique, not become part of a group or organisation. However once the basic course has been completed there is a thorough and comprehensive optional follow-up and support programme.
The first six months follow-up is regarded as part of the initial course and is covered by the fee that you pay to learn Transcendental Meditation. It usually includes one meeting after about 10 days, followed by perhaps four or five more at regular intervals. These meetings ensure that you are self-sufficient in the practice – that you are practising correctly and are enjoying the benefits. They also provide deeper insight into Transcendental Meditation, and may cover related topics such as higher states of consciousness, the system of natural health care known as Maharishi Ayurveda, and the applications of Transcendental Meditation in other areas.
After this there is a continuing programme of meditators’ meetings, weekend courses and advanced courses, for those who wish to participate. However, once you have learned Transcendental Meditation it is essentially something that you can do on your own.
There are over 40 teaching Centres in Great Britain where you can learn Transcendental Meditation. Courses are taught by qualified Teachers who have spent at least a year on full-time training programmes designed and supervised by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of Transcendental Meditation.
The teaching of Transcendental Meditation is administered by a national educational charity, Maharishi Foundation, which maintains the standard of teaching nationwide.
The course fee includes instruction and thorough follow-up, for six months, with as much personal attention as required.
